For many medically necessary specialist consultations billed to OHIP, a referral from an appropriate clinician is part of the care pathway. Requirements depend on the specialty and service.
Your family doctor, nurse practitioner or another appropriate clinician can assess the concern and explain whether a specialist referral is needed. Some allied-health services and private assessments can be accessed directly.
A listed clinic may offer several services with different referral rules. Don't assume an online booking button means a specialist consultation can be booked without a referral.
Ask whether the specific appointment needs a referral, who can make it, whether OHIP applies and what supporting records or test results the clinic needs.
